The two sides of Warren Kimble:
America's foremost folk artist AND taking new directions.

His new works are completely different from anything you are familiar with. His recent showing at the Feick Center at Green Mountain College, "New Work: How Many Widows" are Iraq-related pieces inspired while at an artists' retreat. When listening to an NPR story about three more soldiers dying, Mr. Kimble thought of the women and children, the widows, whose lives would be forever changed. And there are other pieces which deal with the daily lives of people who have been affected by the war, the everyday details of home life which have been altered because of this war.

View Warren Kimble's exhibition at Green Mountain College, just minutes from the Birdhouse Inn.

Do you know any of those folks in the crod?

Travelling to that "other state", New Hampshire, we enjoyed a wonderful visit to St. Gaudens National Historic park in Cornish, NH.

Augustus St. Gaudens was America's foremost and best-known sculptor in the late 1800's and early 1900's, best known for his Shaw's Memorial Sculpture and many other works. His summer home and final residence overlooking the Connecitcut River has lovely gardens and pleasant places to view many of his works.

The Shaw Memorial commemorates the first Northern company of African-American soldiers to serve in the Civil War. The unit, from Massachusetts, fought with bravery and many commendations. The were led by Capt. Shaw, a Caucasian, who was mortally wounded in their first engagement. The sculture is powerful and stirring. You just have to see it!

St. Gaudens' NHP is just 70 miles from the Birdhouse Inn.

A special interview with Valerie from The Free Press.

First question: How old are you?
Answer: We are two weeks and four days old.

Second question: How is the food, chickies?
Answer: Not all that bad, but sure could use some more caterpillars and ants for protein.

And the third question is:???????????????????????????????

Add your thoughts and questions. All questions will be answered.

How about just plain H2O? The chicks do not drink coffee, Doug!

Taking a look at the kids...Roy Ogren decides not to give them a long lecture on "How to Make Chicken Soup." After checking out their cheeps and cheeping he gives them a passing grade.

Thanks for staying with us last night, Roy.

He enjoyed a hearty breakfast of:
  • Karen's Morning Glory Muffins
  • Strawberry, Banana, Hazlenut Buckwheat Pancakes
  • Poached Egg
  • Turkey Bacon
  • Fresh Pineapple
  • Orange Juice and
  • New Mexico Coffee Company 's Pinon Coffee

Your reservation for Reid's graduation in 2007 is all set. See you soon. Best to Maria.

Celebrating their two week "birthday"...look how big they are now! Wow! Eating all the time.

We set up the chicken wire so that some of the kids won't fly out. A few of them had already flown up to the edge of the box to take a look at the outside world. So we had to make some emergency barriers for the precocious chickies!

"Ethics and the Art of Peeping"...

Don't Bite the Hand that Feeds You!

The chicks are getting a philosophy lesson from Dr. Steve Fesmire, professor of philosophy at Green Mountain College and our neighbor.

Cogito ergo sum.

Wildflowers of East Poultney.
On a recent walk around our beautiful village.

The Godfather, Girard, makes a quick visit to see his godchildren. They have grown up a lot...eating and pooping all day! Plus, they have learned some new tricks, too!

"Princess Diane" brought us a lovely gift basket of many things that we love including New Mexico Pinon Coffee, BBQ sauce, and some special Italian candies.
Thanks, Diane.

Who says that there is no culture in Poultney?

85 Main Street's Studio Show Saturday featured the works of Derek Anderson, Johanna Brown, Masumi Nyui, Amber Rohe, and Laura Teschka. The artists' reception was a fine mix of artists, educators, interested visitors, and just plain ole folks like you and me!

Prints, textiles, drawings, and ceremaics were among the works displayed.

Nice job, all!

Chekc them out at: http://85mainst.blogspot.com

I ventured to my first Poultney Library book discussion. The series involves "food", of course. This month's author was Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni who wrote The Mistress of Spices. Nomally, I wouldn't read such a story: a tale of of fantasy, mystery, and intrique, a "romantic novel", of sorts. But each chapter was titled by a "spice" and what powers it had over people when the powers were invoked by the Mistress of Spices. So, I kept on reading!

Actually, an enjoyable book. The book group had lively discussions and a tasting of some Indian food to boot!

Looking forward to the next book.

As a first course those Maine Maholgany clams with egg fettucine were scrumptious!
